(NB: If my chronology is correct, Deb was either the last or next-to-last $25,000 winner before me.)
I won $25,400 on Whew!, tape date June
13th, 1979 (forget the air date though).
The last question on the Gauntlet of Villains was “Marilyn Chambers, the
ex-Ivory Soap girl, starred in the X-rated film, Behind
the Green Giant,” to which
I quickly blurted out “door,” and won the money at literally the very last
second!
I was only 18 at the time, had never seen a porno film, but on the route to my
orthodontist, my mother and I would pass by a (ahem) adult movie theatre
(long since gone) at Wilshire and 26th in Santa Monica. I would see the
title of that movie, which ran literally for years there, and I remember I had
read somewhere that Marilyn Chambers had been the Ivory Soap “girl”
previously. So, getting my teeth straightened won me $25,000! J
[Tom Kennedy] may also remember me as
the contestant who took my high heels off to run the Gauntlet. At the end
of the show, he also took his shoes off and we waved them at the audience at the
close-out. (My grandmother thought that was sooo cute, I still get so
many comments on that shot!)
I am very glad to hear Tom is alive and well, what a great host he was!
P.S. [J]ust as I said on
the show, I did indeed use that money for my college education. I
graduated from the Ivy League school of Brown
University, and also went on
exchange programs to England at Cambridge University and to
Keio University
in Japan. I could never have had those experiences without that win
on Whew! So, literally, my life was changed by being on that show!
P.S.S. Years later, I again worked with Jay Wolpert, who I also adore, and
I was able to let him know [this] same info. He was genuinely touched, and
told me at the time he always wanted to know what happened to contestants that
had been on his show, and he was so happy to find out about my good story.
| My warmest thanks to
Deb
Howard for enthusiastically permitting me to share her story! |
